Introduction by ROI President Ian Cryer

The ROI was founded in 1882 and is uniquely dedicated to celebrating, informing and assisting those who practice the Art of Oil Painting. Among the ROI's membership are many of the best contemporary artists who work in this very robust and versatile medium, and the diversity of the styles on show at the Annual Exhibition at the Mall Galleries bear this out. As well as providing a Society for professional artists the Institute also actively encourages and supports talented young artists through its awards and activities.

Membership of the ROI is open to artists who have shown work of a consistently high standard in its annual exhibition. Successful candidates are first elected associate members of the Institute and have a maximum period of five years in which to illustrate their suitability for full membership. Those interested in developing skills in Oil Painting are encouraged to join the Friends of the ROI which gives them access to the ROI membership's wealth of experience. Workshops, Master classes and group painting days are run monthly, details via email on this site.

The Royal Institute of Oil Painters (The ROI) originally known as the Institute of Painters in Oil Colours was granted its Royal status by King Edward VII in 1909 and has been a constant haven for good painting during the economic ups and downs and global conflicts that have challenged this country over the past 130 plus years.

We are delighted to have the support of our sponsors DAS Insurance and we thank Winsor & Newton for their continuing annual sponsorship of the 'Artists under 35 Oil Awards'.
